Only Clegg has the power to rid us of the mess in Cameron's mind!

On 5th September 2010, I wondered on the apparent absence of any moral compass in the make-up of Prime Minister, David Cameron, over his appointment of Andy Coulson, to Downing street, read here. That posting concluded with the following stark truths for Liberal Democrats:

Liberal Democrats not wishing to now become tarred by the same brush of sleaze, half-truths and downright untruths which the Downing Street media manipulation machine has become over recent years should quickly re-examine the backgrounds and lack of integrity and judgement that seems to be the rule among the leadership of their coalition partners as Parliament re-convenes after its long break during the past crisis ridden summer. Does the country really wish the connotation of 10 Downing Street to be set by former News of the World editor Andy Coulson? If so many former Tory Prime Ministers must now be turning in their graves.

In May this year a wake-up call to Paddy Ashdown on the Blog Orphans of Liberty, to which I at least received the courtesy of a reply, that cannot be linked at present as the site is down, but the repeat of the posting on this blog is linked here. It began as follows:

In the fraught days of two years ago, when the general election delivered a hung parliament to Britain, the crucial role played by former Liberal Democrat Party Leader, Lord Paddy Ashdown, became evident through his frquent media appearences and statements. An even more critical turning point now presents itself to this senior party grandée, and self-appointed representative of decency within Britain's system of governance.

Can Lord Ashdown still shrug off my concerns so readily today as he felt able so to do last May?

Last evening on Sky News we watched Business Secretary of State, Vince Cable, squirm on the Jeff Randall Live interview, whilst trying to defend the completely odious Lord Green whom it appears was content to oversee activities while in charge at HSBC  rightly condemned last week in the US Congress.

Nick Clegg must be woken up to realise that the connotations of linking names such as Osborne/Oleg Deripaska and Coulson/Wade will hardly sit well with voters seeking a change from the present corrupt methods of contemporary politics and an escape from being governed according to the priorities and perogatives of the messy mind inside the head of David Cameron.

All this takes on an even greater urgency when the extent of the disaster in the Euro Group is taken on board, Britain will need some right thinking individuals looking out for the nation's interests as these events unfold, as it appears ever more doubtful that this crisis is going to permit Europe's leaders and coddled fonctionaires their usual two month summer break, while matters fester and deteriorate ever further, they can hardly surely now hardly get any worse?

Oil proves Osborne incompetent on economy - EU/Olympics for all politicos

Osborne's incompetence in attempting to intitailly destroy one of the few productive sectors of our economy in his ealiest days was pointed up by The Guardian in March 2011, linked here. This blog of course was on this case from the start reminding readers on 23rd February of this year as follows:

George Osborne's policies have already resulted in a real slow-down in exploration activity in the British sector of the North Sea. Brilliantly mistimed and breathtakingly ignorant as it was when first announced his extra tax decisions appear ever more mistaken as the threat from Iran in the Straits of Hormuz pushes the oil markets to daily higher prices.

Osborne's stubborn pride, crass ignorance and almost complete ministerial incompetence, in charge of Britain's economy during this period of grave crisis cannot surely be allowed to continue any longer, given the proof of all that knowledgeable oil industry experts have been maintaining for many months, as evidenced by this report from The Scotsman, this morning, which after the good news concludes:

“These statistics always sound very exciting because we’re operating from a low base of activity. We have some way to go before we are back to the levels seen in 2009 and 2010.”

The lamentable reports on the Olympics provide another insight into the total inability of politicians from any party, once put in office, to run anything, presumably compounded by the elitist ignorant university trained hierarchies of an almost entirely blinkered and back-scratching civil service power structure.

Yet all that shrinks into complete insignificance viewing the farce of the media show in a railway shed yesterday of the PM and his Deputy. What should have been urgently concerning these two public school pratts cannot be better summarised, I believe, than by this contribution, last evening from The Slog, linked here. A quote on Britain:

Future observers and historians will look back at this euromess, and probably have three main reactions: first, they will wonder why the populace allowed gravy-train bureaucrats and hubris-blinded politicians to continue the pointless pavane for so long;  and second, they will gasp at the smug inaction of Camerlot in failing to spot when an imponderable outcome became an impossible nightmare for the British.

Bastille Day finds France blowing €Billions on EU Glorification

I had hoped that in spite of completely mental taxation and spending policies the incoming socialist administration in France would at least have the common sense to halt the ridiculous massive spending on vainglorious rail improvement projects cutting mere minutes from journey times to Brussels, solely for the pride of the insane EU and its pampered Commissioners and employees. Not so!

Attending our commune's Mairie to complete the new five paged formalities regarding bonfires in our garden (President Hollande's plan to ease unemployment so far consists of hiring an extra 150,000 civil servants, so we can expect more of these,) we were given a broadsheet, twelve page, full colour presentation called LISEA Express, detailing the incredible waste of billions of €uros on the high-speed upgrade for the existing efficient and speedy rail link, between Tours and Bordeaux, known as LGV (Ligne Grande Vitesse) Tours Bordeaux. France was lucky in that Britain pipped it to the post in getting the 2012 Olympics, so the French will be spared the ludicrous waste of taxpayers' money in the full face of the worst economic crisis the world has likely ever faced. In France, Renault and Peugeot this week announced car sales in France down around 15% in the second quarter, a truly shocking fall given the depressed start point from the 2007/2008 crisis effected levels. One Peugeot factory will be shut with 8,000 more job losses on top of the 6,500 previously announced.

Here are some of the dreadful statistics this free brochure boasts about in extolling the detail of this rail project, exceeded technologically, of course, while Queen Victoria sat upon England's throne:

Train speeds will rise from 230 km/hr to 320km/hr (Keeping civil servants from their desks as long as possible would likely yield greater taxpayer savings, ordinary folk will be flying with budget airlines):

No matter, the EU inspired railway line, designed to get Spanish and Portuguese fonctionaires to their Brussels desks some twenty minutes faster than previously, ignoring the fact that flying from Lisbon and Madrid would be quicker and cheaper AND that there will likely be no need for such journeys, given both countries might soon regain their independence from Brussels through economic necessity.

70 stream and 4 major river crossings:

14 crossings above or below existing rail tracks:

1,000 diversions of gas pipelines,telephone and fibre optic cables, 300 deviations of electricity power lines and moving 320 water mains.

3 million tons of ballast to be quarried and laid.

3,000 hectares of preventitive archaeology, etc., etc., etc.

Can one credit the supposed thought processes of those authorising and overseeing such waste, not just at a national level, where the lunacy of appointing civil servants to reduce unemployment now sits alongside the compulsory 35 hour week for extreme governmental absurdity?

At the back of the French administrative mind, I suspect lies the thought that much of the cash being blown away comes from others in the EU. Cameron should take note, criminal waste on such a grand scale will not be tolerated in England,  HS2 should be cancelled in the UK and concurrently Britain should freeze all EU budget contributions dedicated to the transport sector, failure to do so is an abdication of responsibility; Justine Greening the transport secretary should present that case.

Instead we get an announcement this moment on the BBC Radio 4 news at 8:00 that the rail line between London and Sheffield is to be electrified, funded by the EU as well? My foot, we are all broke! £500 million down the drain to keep Nick Clegg sweet, Sheffield holds his constituency, pork barrel spending at its worst!

Clarke and Clegg plot to sideline Parliament - The Guardian!

It is a rare day when I come across an article in The Guardian which appears to object to the onward march of socialism and EU collectivism, but today is an exception, read here.

The part played in the decades long destruction of our nation state by the present Justice Secretary, Ken Clarke is well known among democrats, Nick Clegg since becoming Deputy Prime Minister has excelled in managing to match him in his toadying to the EU in the 22 months since acquring office.

Tory MPs would do well to abandon their normal newspapers this morning and fully absorb the implications of the Guardian report, some of which I quote herewith:

A government commission set up to examine the establishment of a British bill of rights has "sidelined parliament and the prime minister", one of the commissioners has said after his resignation....

[Pinto-Duschinsky, the resigning Commissioner yesterday said on the BBC Politics Show]

"The commission answers to Ken Clarke. He and Nick Clegg set it up and selected the chairman. His civil servants run the commission and staffing. His hands are everywhere," he said.

"He [Clarke] is following the agenda of the human rights establishment, which is well represented on the commission. In doing so he is sidelining not only parliament but also the prime minister, and I consider that disloyal."

Clegg's guests in London tomorrow include one of the main perpetrators of EU chaos.

Olli Rehn, as frequently pointed out on this blog, bears huge responsibility for two years of disastrous policy failures over the EU bail outs asVice President of the EU Commission for Economic and Monetary Affairs.

Marke Rutte, with whom Clegg will be able to share side discussions in Dutch to disguise the proceedings from any non-biased civil servants (should any exist in the Office of the Deputy PM or Foreign Affairs), attended an elitist Gymanasium School and has notably recently - told the BBC that any further withdrawal from Europe risks making Britain “a pygmy in the world.”- one way Clegg presumably hopes to overshadow Cameron!

German Economy Minister Philipp Roesler recently blamed Britain for constantly giving advice as to what Germany should do to fix the euro debt crisis, yet was unwilling to help solve it.

"I find it somewhat odd that they don't even have the euro yet they constantly give us advice what we should do," Roesler said, adding "but they don't want to help in any way."(Telegraph report here).

The Coalition is clearly divided and Clegg should be brought back in line on the EU or an election called! Meantime the delegates to the Liberal Get-together could all learn the words and tune to Olli's theme tune awarded by this blog:

Clegg set to extend his EU treachery.

The Deputy Prime Minister and EU plant at the heart of the government is preparing to further his efforts to ensure this country loses what little autonomy it still retains.

The London Evening Standard is reporting this afternoon, linked here, that Clegg plans a meeting " of liberal-minded ministers from other European states in London on January 9 to build common ground." Thereafter he plans to take the campaign to the European mainland itself, where Clegg has always clearly felt more at home!

77% of Institute of Directors want LESS EU

The poll results reported in the Daily Mail this morning prove Britain's businesses do not support the manipulations of Clegg, with 85% believing the EU measures at the 8th/9th EU summit would solve the crisis and only 19% believing PM Cameron was wrong to reject joining the Fiscal Union. Clegg plotting with Germany to overturn Cameron's NO on Non-EU Treaty!

Why does Clegg wish to remain Deputy PM of a "Pygmy Country"?

Lord Tebbit in his Telegraph blog this ,morning turns his attention to the shallow opportunist who remains, for the time being, the country's Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, it is linked from here. It concludes that Clegg is worse even than was John Prescott, but for me this passage carries the essential facts on Clegg:

One has to start by trying to understand Mr Clegg. He is British by passport rather than much else. He describes himself (accurately) as European rather than English. He sneers at the country of which he is Deputy Prime Minister as a "pygmy country".

The question posed in the penultimate paragraph of Lord Tabbit's quote, should be one the whole country should be able to ask, with a referendum being urgently provided for their response, just as promised by Mr Clegg in April 2010, as I posted and linked on this blog yesterday:

So we might ask our Deputy Prime Minister: "What about the Eurocrats?" Are they not a closed society in which power is entrenched in the hands of an unaccountable elite? Indeed, so much power that they have recently carried out coups d'état against the elected governments of Greece and Italy.

Nick Clegg, working with or for the EU?

The above first appeared in a Daily Telegraph link which concentrated on how Clegg foresaw Britain's future as permanently in the EU but with this quote:

However he said the Lib Dems, if elected, would let the public decide on the basic question of whether Britain should remain within the EU by holding a referendum when the subject next arose.

Surely he cannot pretend that the subject of the EU has not now arisen, perhaps he considers it as "disappeared" like his EU pension?

What happened to Nick Clegg's EU Pension?

The Deputy Prime Minister of the UK, Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrat Party was for many years mainly dedicated to the advancement of the European Union, as such and for that direct service and subsequently as an MEP he would have been entitled to an EU pension. Yet it has apparently, albeit unsurprisingly been magically disappeared away, (no doubt to miraculously return at some point in the future). Lord Wallace of Saltaire: The Deputy Prime Minister is no longer eligible to receive a pension from the European Commission.

Yesterday, this agent of the EU, buried deep at the heart of the British administration, answered questions for MPs. Unhappily it appears none asked him to explain this extraordinary response to Lord Pearson's question, nor the premise for and circumstances of the disappearing of his EU pension.

Nick Clegg signs up to Cameron's EU break!

The Deputy Prime Minister of Britain and David Cameron's Coalition Partner in Government has pledged his support for the action taken by David Cameron in Brussels last night.

Reuters has been reported by Sky News as confirming this fact, previously claime by Foreign Secretary Hague and reported in The Guardian, but held back by this blog pending confirmation.

Nick Clegg, Deputy PM of Great Britain - epitomy of all that stinks in the EU

As Nigel Farage stated in response to Clegg's speech to the shaming disgrace that is the so-called European parliament:

"As an MEP he voted for virtually everything that the EU proposed, every regulation, every directive that has created the treacle like swamp of regulations that are strangling British and European businesses. He is personally culpable for so much of the mess we are in, and has no answer for it. He admits that the EU is in terminal decline, yet tells us in Britain that we must remain shackled to its rapidly sinking economic corpse."

MP Bill Cash said it "beggared belief" that Clegg was calling for a cut in red tape and EU directives to boost competitiveness "while in the same breath he leads the UK's leading euro-fanatic party, and for years he actively encouraged over-regulation". Clegg was an MEP between 1999 and 2004. The staunchly Eurosceptic Cash added: "Having swallowed European proposals hook, line and sinker, in Westminster he opposes reform, opposes a referendum, opposes repatriation and opposes renegotiation. So much for reform. It is not enough to say that Europe is suffering from a crisis of competitiveness but doing the opposite in practice." He warned that Britain's influence would decline as the eurozone integrates more closely: "The deputy prime minister can warn all he wants about promises of safeguards for 'a club within a club' but the 17 eurozone countries will act in their own interests and not in the interests of the 27. The result is a two-tier Europe."

Britain's illegal contributions to illegal EFSM

Britain's Commitments under the EFSM, accrue on a basis that is supposedly explained in this linked pdf document.

Note from Page 5, the far-reaching depths of the obligations incurred by Alistair Darling, when there was actually no legal Government in place in Britain.

There are many important features that have enabled the confirmation of the EU's AAA rating. First, the EU is unconditionally committed to honouring its legal obligations towards its lenders. Second, the European Commission has the right to draw on Member States' resources to ensure that sufficient budget revenues are available at all times to cover all obligatory expenditures, including debt servicing. And lastly, Member States are legally obliged to balance the EU’s budget, including debt-servicing.(Blog editor's emphasis added in red).

Note from Page 8, that the peak periods for the payback of State Guaranteed Debt are at their most severe from the end of this summer. See also the Charts on that page, which illustrate the comparatively comfortable position of the UK as compared to the Eurozone. A benefit to Britain that the EFSM clearly seeks to eliminate!

Commission calculations show that peak amounts of state-guaranteed bank debt are expected to mature in the fourth quarter of 2011 through the second quarter of 2012. Comparing charts 5 and 6 illustrates the close correlation between the maturity profiles of both general and guaranteed bank debt and highlights the periods that will be most challenging in the coming months and years.

The footnotes numbered 10 and 11 from Page 9 are also worth highlighting here.

10 Approximately 86% of the nearly EUR 600 billion in government guaranteed bank debt that was issued between October 2008 and December 2009 was rated AAA, comprising a significant portion of the totals that will come due through 2012.
11 This would mean that when refinancing or in the event of a new issuance, such debt instruments would carry the rating of the banks themselves and no longer the rating of the sovereign guarantors.

According to the BBC's Stuttering Peston we contribute 4.5% to the IMF portion of these bailouts (in an increasingly likely default situation) but 13.5% to the EFSM, linked here. Bill Cash MP reckons the figures are 4.8% and 10.2% respectively, read here. These are whopping sums, even before the EU Commissions' proposal of an increase made this morning, upon which I blogged earlier, (see immediately below).

Given that the whole foundation for the EFSM, read here is illegal anyway, as all countries joined the Euro Currency voluntarily and in the face of currency unions throughout history failing without the pooling of economic governance, AND against the combined warnings of many renowned economists at the time, how can this action therefore now be considered as caused by exceptional circumstances beyond their control:

Whereas:(1) Article 122(2) of the Treaty foresees the possibility of granting Union financial assistance to a Member State in difficulties or seriously threatened with severe difficulties caused by exceptional occurrences beyond its control.

Furthermore, in Britain's case, no Government existed which could grant approval of such arrangements, even were they ever to be declared as legal as the decision was taken by a non-minister (Alistair Darling) reporting to a non-Prime Minister (Gordon Brown). Yet the present Coalition Government to this day claim that it was their predecessors who took this disastrous decision.

Former Marxist Darling given last chance to fully wreck Britain's economy!

The following is contained in an Agreement reached by the EU eurozone Heads of State in an INFORMAL meeting of the Eurogroup (ie Euro currency zone members only) - Third, taking into account the exceptional circumstances, the Commission will propose a European stabilization mechanism to preserve financial stability in Europe. It will be submitted for decision to an extraordinary ECOFIN meeting that the Spanish presidency will convene this Sunday May 9th. Alistair Darling belongs to a defeated party and should have no authority to attend an ECOFIN meeting charged with reaching a pan-EU agreement as commanded by members of the euro currency group. David Cameron and Nick Clegg should clarify Darling's status immediately and if possible prevent his departure from the country!

Ireland's new leader to face EU's EPP heavies in Helsinki. Clegg pushes for Muslim EU.

The Irish Times notes that the tussle over forming a coaltion in that country now centres around the appointment of a finance minister. Elsewhere it makes plain that the real economic outcome for the euro devastated country will be settled in Helsinki in the coming hours, read here.

Nick Clegg, presumably wishing to avoid the humiliation heaped on his party at Barnsley Central last evening (where his party was pushed down to sixth place in a Westminster By-election), chose instead to make a fautuous speech to his EU non-entities, laughingly gathered to discuss Libya etc.' where they agreed to hold a summit on 11th March, as that was an already scheduled meeting date on other matters,  EurActiv reports, linked here:

Speaking alongside Barroso, UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who later met EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, also struck a geopolitical note in his statement. Building on his country's support for Turkey's EU membership, he went much further than Barroso, emphasising the role that Turkey might play as role model for Arab countries to follow and as living proof that democracy and Islam are not incompatible.

"As a Muslim majority country, a NATO member and a country firmly committed to the path to EU membership, and a state with a vibrant multi-party democracy, [Turkey] provides a valuable example for other societies. Turkey's warm relations in the region offer benefits in terms of achieving the openness and respect for human rights that we all support," Clegg said.

Cameron and Clegg must surely soon be made to realise that they may be big fish in the thoroughly polluted, stagnant and stinking pond that is British politics, but emerging from such waters they will not be fit company for their more respectable foreign opposite numbers, working as national statesmen and women in attempting to resolve the serious issues facing the world.

Cameron/Coulson/Clegg - By their friends shall ye know them!

Coulson being questioned by the police can hardly come as a surprise to any who have followed his career and background. Here and here. With Coulson at the centre of Britain's Coalition Government the people of the country will sooner rather than later realise they are being governed by a small clique of PR savvy conmen. Long may he remain at the centre of power to spur the few decent men and women remaining in British politics to gather their courage for once in their lives to do the decent thing and eject them all from power. I wouldn't even employ a PR firm run by Andy, Dave and Nick would you? Sounds altogether too chumsey given the backgrounds they would all first have to submit!

For which Nation does Nick Clegg speak at the UN?

Nicholas William Peter Clegg (such refreshingly cosy sounding familiar Christian names) has his family tree listed on the Wikipedia web site which is linked here. The information provided seems largely backed up in an article from "Family Detective" on Nick Clegg which appeared shortly after he beat Chris Huhne for the leadership of the Liberal Democrat party, which is linked from here. On Wikipedia Clegg allows this thumbnail description: Clegg is multilingual: he speaks English, Dutch, French, German, and Spanish. His background has informed his politics. He says, "There is simply not a shred of racism in me, as a person whose whole family is formed by flight from persecution, from different people in different generations. It’s what I am. It’s one of the reasons I am a liberal." His Dutch mother instilled in him "a degree of scepticism about the entrenched class configurations in British society". Before we go further let me declare my interest in this particular subject, Clegg is a typical Euro leech, who normally would not be worth the effort of investigating, British politics is full of such pensioned apparatchiks whose (tax dubious) EU pensions would be at risk were they not to spend every waking minute extending the seditious powers of this foul institution. Yesterday morning it was reported, however, that Clegg had stepped over the line by suggesting that the use of Tax Accountants was somehow immoral. Let me be clear on this blog's position on tax, namely that it is the duty of every citizen, in the interests of his own family, for whom he/she is ultimately responsible to reduce their tax payments to the legal minimum within their country of residence. Secondly let me re-iterate that the evasion of national taxes is theft of their taxpaying countrymen's funds especially when they are accomplished by secretive amendments and hidden clauses in various EU Treaties. Such evasion should IMO become a criminal offence that would thereafter place large numbers of Britain's Great and the so-called Good, being such recipients, firmly behind bars - our Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg would, because of his EU background, necessarily be among them. But Clegg is not just any old greedy British failed politician milking the system for all he is worth, in fact Nick Clegg can hardly be considered British, let alone English at all. Even the two linked articles above show he is at best only one quarter British, yet the missing portions of the Wikipedia illustrated family tree (note number 21) and background of the humble origins of his supposed British forebears raise more questions than are answered. How, for instance, from his oh so humble origins, did Dr Hugh Anthony Clegg rise to edit the British Medical Journal and earn such a lengthy tribute, linked here, which noted that he was quite an internationalist as a member of the Council of the World medical association and initiated (and later served as its Secretary) the First World Conference on Medical Education. A surprising feat implying considerable international networking for an individual with the background described in the last two paragraphs of the Telegraph link. Speculation and research on my own ancestry with a similar anomaly I have learned cannot easily be discovered let alone explained, so we will leave such questions aside. It is clear enough from the undisputed facts and background that Nick Clegg is by no means a typical average Brit! Four languages indeed, I am deeply envious I must admit! So how did this internationalist arrive in Downing Street at the heart of Britain's Governmental power? Well obviously the EU has played its part, in fact looking at the article on Clegg's expenses manipulations, linked here, we discover this startling information: The claims also include two bills for the Liberal Democrat leader’s home phone in Sheffield, one for £105.88 and the other for £121.56. These detailed four calls to Colombia, including two mobile phones, three to Vietnam, including two mobiles, and 21 calls to Belgium, including six mobiles. Draw what conclusions you wish from these mistaken claims, in my mind far more damage has been done to Clegg's reputation as a freely acting typical Englishman that he likes to portray than to his other facade as an English gentlemen, unlikely to be putting in 21 calls to Belgium, home country to the odious EU, drug-war torn Colombia and even Vietnam let alone claiming their costs from the poor old British taxpayer. Yet worse, far worse is to come today! Fresh from his appearences on TV this past weekend and exhortations at his party conference in Liverpool when he lectured the nation on the burning necessity for massive and immediate cuts (which this blog does not dispute) he is now prepared to stand before the UN and on behalf of these same suffering taxpayers, proffer untold bounty and largesse to be spread around the world by organisations broadly similar to the corrupted EU and generally stuffed full of Clegg-like clones syphoning much of the donated funds as they laboriously make their way to the poor. Only a leader of a nation acting on behalf of interests beyond that nation's shores would attempt such perfidy. Who does Clegg represent, it speaks for itself really, does it not? Anybody and anything other than the UK appears the only answer. Look again at the family tree for Nick Clegg on the Wikipedia link at the head of this posting, and ponder was he perhaps selectively bred and meticulously programmed by the sinister forces behind the EU from his earliest days to appear as a virtual Englishman while working towards our final destruction, not much that he does seems to work against such a theory? Is Nick Clegg, perhaps, a prototype model of an EURobot? How can Conservative MPs allow such an outrage to continue? Ask them if you plan to attend their conference.

Alibhai-Brown on Blair and Clegg

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is a commentator and sometimes Dateline London broadcaster who, as this weekend, I sometimes watch and read with sometimes open-mouthed incredulity at the sheer plodding predictability of her nineteen-seventies left-wing views. This morning in The Independent however she puts her finger on something about Nick Clegg that I have been hinting at on this blog for the past few weeks. The article concludes as quoted below, but it may be read in full from this link. "What he (-editor's note Tony Blair...) told us was expedient and increasingly unbelievable. (There is a name for this mental condition – mythomania: the compulsion to embroider the truth, engage in exaggeration or tell lies.)

John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the USA (1767- 1848) wrote: "Power always thinks it has a great soul and vast views beyond the comprehension of the weak and that it is doing God's service when it is violating all his laws." Is there any more pithy and exact description of Blair and the perils of high office?

Something about him, particularly in the live TV debates, awakened the old hopes in many voters on the left. I speak of Nick Clegg, Deputy PM, a role thrust upon him and which he has taken to rather too well. "Like Blair with Bush, so Clegg seems to be with David Cameron, too flattered now that he is in the big room with the most powerful people. He no longer seems himself. Nor does Vince Cable. Both are undoubtedly holding back the most rabid Tory ideas, and there is no need yet to give up on them. (If only they would tell us more of the Lib Dem effect on policies.) But there is a glint in their eyes that reminds me of Blair on the turn when he became impatient with critics and refused to engage with public opinion. Perhaps they should read about Blair's journey – it may well save them from taking the same treacherous road and help save our faith in politics.

Nick Clegg talks sense again.

What is happening to the Liberal/Democrats? Most of their MPs have emerged from the expenses relatively unscathed - now their leader, horrible eu-federalist though he may be, was making perfect sense in his interview on the Andrew Marr Show on BBC1 this morning, in complete contrast to the dreadful performance offered by the leader of the supposed main opposition party David Cameron, who seemed to make staying within the corrupt and now clearly sinking EU his main priority above all other policy areas. Cameron's Party Chairman, the smarmy stupid and overbearing Eric Pickles was meantime being revealed over the breakfast tables of the nation as a former ardent Marxist in the Sunday Times.... figures! Staythorpe Protest and Clegg's son Miguel

There will be new protests at Staythorpe Power Station continuing in Newark later today, read one report here. The fact that Nick Clegg, whose own links to Spain are not generally trumpeted, has decide with his Spanish wife to call their third child Miguel did not strike me as particularly odd when reading the news reports yesterday, but bearing in mind the refusal of the Spanish sub-contractor at Staythorpe to hire British workers and Clegg's close relations with the EU and his status as an EU pensioner it occurs to me that the choice of name for his third son might be taken with a view to getting some form of future guarantee of employment in England when the lad matures in twenty odd years time. We must face facts, I guess, after all at the present rate who will be employable in a 100 per cent EU controlled England by then? The junior Clegg will presumably not be aiming for a job as a construction worker of course, possible a career in another area of Spanish investment, such as a foot on the ladder towards running the Abbey National perhaps!
