Only hope is now the Liberal Democrats!

This post was first published on "Orphans of Liberty" yesterday, under the title "A telling moment of truth for Lord Paddy Ashdown," it is repeated here today, because of what its author considers is its relative importance for the restoration of some standards in public life in Britain!

In the fraught days of two years ago, when the general election delivered a hung parliament to Britain, the crucial role played by former Liberal Democrat Party Leader, Lord Paddy Ashdown, became evident through his frquent media appearences and statements. An even more critical turning point now presents itself to this senior party grandée, and self-appointed representative of decency within Britain's system of governance.

To understand why this blogger believes that such is the case it would be helpful to reflect on a cermony that took place at Pointe de Grave in France just over one year ago on 31st March 2011, when a memorial was unveiled in honour of a WWII commando raid, at which Lord Ashdown undertook to represent our country, read here. Only two of the commandoes survived, many of their comrades were shot, upon the direct orders of Hitler, but with the connivance, processing, transportation and full reponsibility of the supposedly once honourable German armed forces. Ordinary combatants they were, shot in cold blood for pursuing the very hostilities that the German Army had itself instigated and was in the process of perpetrating while occupying the sovereign soil of France by armed brute force. Paddy Ashdown has thus accepted a leading role in representing the moral beliefs of our nation, beliefs that have rarely been so comprehensively challenged as they were in the five hours of evidence provided by Rebekah Brooks at the Leveson Inquiry yesterday.

Every Prime Minister since Thatcher, and it would appear almost the entire cabinet members of all administrations since Tony Blair, seem to be potentially implicated in this seeming subversion. The Liberal Democrats have so far emerged largely unscathed from the sordid details of political power plays and manipulations of our main party politicians by the tawdry journals that are/were The Sun and the News of the World and those who controlled them. We have yet to even arrive at the part played by Trevor Kavanagh - clearly Coulson and Brooks were but cockily conceited mere pawns in this dark game. Nick Clegg, as was warned on my blog Ironies Too several times, made himself a party to this scandal by accepting Coulson as the Coalition's press spokesman.

There are of course others in the Liberal Democrat hierarchy to be looked to, along with Ashdown, to now do the right thing, namely withdraw their support from the coalition with the Conservative Party and possibly in the process of the probable resulting general election, regain an opportunity of re-establishing some credentials for decency, as extolled by Lord Ashdown and exemplified by all the marine commandos involved in Operation Frankton, not least the fortitude in the escape as shown by Hessler and Sparks, which seems hardly comprehensible to those of us so pampered to live in 2012, not seventy years earlier!

Other Liberal Democrats whom might also be scrupulousy examing their consciences this weekend among senior Lib/Dem figures are (in no particular order) Simon Hughes, Charles Kennedy, David Laws, Menzies Campbell, David Owen and David Steel

Operation Frankton - the evil it endeavoured to eradicate, endures in today's EU!

Last evening, on BBC television, Lord Paddy Ashdown presented a programme dedicated to the heroic exploits of ten men, who in December 1942, launched their canvas canoes from the submarine HMS Tuna off Pointe de Grave, and paddled fifty miles to plant limpet mines on the blockade running German ships lying alongside the quays of Bordeaux. Only two, Hessler and Sparks, survived - several of their comrades were shot in cold blood in brutal contravention of all decency and legality, contrived with the full complicity of the German High Command!

Similar fanaticism is in evidence in the EU of today, witnessed for example, when I turn on my radio this morning, to be informed that the democratically elected Prime Minister of Greece, has been summoned to Cannes to explain the granting of a democratic referendum to his people. This referendum, last evening received the support of his Cabinet, read here.

In South West France, the heroics of Blondie Hessler and his brave men have not been forgotten. Last March an impressive Memorial was dedicated at the northernmost tip of the Medoc, as I reported on this blog, linked here.

An organisation called Frankton Souvenir has dedicated a series of plaques along the escape route of Hessler and Sparks, from Blaye to Ruffec, as they sought refuge with the French Resistance. Walks along different sections of this lengthy trek are regulary held, next year's will be in June and will run from St Germain de Vibrac to Barret in the Charente.

The illustrated bi-lingual Walks Books written by my wife and myself include itineraries and take in some of the plaques. Book One contains a brief description of the operation - more details are here. Book Three (in preparation) will feature other itineraries upriver from Angoulême.

A book in French, written by François Bosnier and Raymond Muelle, published by Tresor du Patrimone ISBN 2-915118-00-0 has much background detail.

The Frankton Souvenir organisation has 102 French members and 52 British and would welcome new members and support. Several other activities are planned for 2012, the 70th anniversary of the action. Subscriptions are €15 and should be sent to the treasurer Guy Celle,- 32 route de Chez Guinot - 17520 SAINT EUGENE - France.

Keeping the memories of these brave men alive is perhaps some small way in which we can all  counter the threats to our liberties, which sadly are once again becoming apparent today!

Readers of this blog in the UK, who missed the programme, may see it again over the next week on the BBC ipod Player. It would be fitting if somebody with some spare time could upload the entire programme on YouTube so a wider audience could learn of the sacrifices our forefathers were prepared to make for their liberty and democracy.

Frankton Memorial Dedication - Cockleshell Heroes - Pointe de Grave - 31/3/11

My wife and I were lucky enough to be invited today, by the Royal Marines, to the unveiling of the new Frankton Memorial, at the northernmost point of the Medoc, Pointe de Grave.

The most moving moment of the ceremony for us, was the moment when two elderly French ladies who had assisted some of the marine commandoes in their escape from the Nazi murderers, who against all rules of warfare, had already slaughtered many of their comrades. This photograph of mine captures the  touching moment after these brave ladies had laid their wreaths:

Another very personal highlight of the ceremony honouring Anglo-French harmony, was the complete absence of any of the blue, yellow starred, EU flags, symbol of the present latest danger to our freedoms.

A BBC report is linked here, while a more personal tribute from BBC Scotland is here.
