Why did the Titanic not list to starboard?

As the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic approaches, this blog will be raising its impact upon Britain, the significance of the presence of W.T. Stead, the subsequent obsession of Nazi Germany with the event and the question raised in the subject of this posting!

See this picture from Der Spiegel, which might tweek your own curiosity, lifeboats were launched from both port and starboard sides, yet the gash appears quite clearly here, on the starboard side which should have rendered the port side lifeboats unlaunchable!
