Democracy Defied and Denied!

The following is from a report in EurActiv, linked here and published today.

The coalition agreement between Kenny's centre-right Fine Gael party and the centre-left Labour party, clinched shortly after midnight last night, seems designed to curry favour with the fiscally conservative Germans and draws a veil over some of the anti-EU rhetoric deployed in the election campaign.

In London, The Independent newspaper reports a shock poll in France that puts Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Front, ahead of her rivals in an opinion poll on voting intentions for the coming presidential campaign, under the headline "French mainstream in shock after poll puts Le Pen in lead"

Given that national leaders still depend upon the democratic consent of their national electorates, they might wish to reflect that their survival, perfectly obviously, now cries out for the EU to be disbanded. If it cannot even have one useful thing to say or action to take, as its nearest neighbouring supplier of the petroleum upon which its ecomomies depend, descends into civil war and chaos, the EU's uselessness is clear to all its member's populations, if not to their EU cash dependent party political leaders.
