Law Lord condemns the European Court of Justice

Lord Hoffmann, the second most senior Law Lord, said the Strasbourg court had imposed "uniform rules" on states. He also said the European Court in Strasbourg had been unable to resist the temptation to "aggrandise its jurisdiction" by laying down a "federal law of Europe". The BBC, read their report on the Judges comment from here, in a broadcast radio news bulletin has stated that the court is in danger of grinding to a halt due to a vast backlog of about 100.000 cases. Would that were true for the other pillars of the EU. They then interviewed the former Lord Chancellor who disagreed with Lord Hooper's conclusion that the ECJ should be disbanded. Typically for the BBC the supposed balancing opinion in their broadcast discussion of the problems of the ECJ and the Human Rights Convention also agreed that both should continue.
